Hi, I'm Brooke Calderon, LMFT #109707. I am originally from the Midwest, but I have lived in the San Francisco Bay Area since 2005. In addition to being a therapist, I am a mother, an artist and a lover of nature. I was drawn to therapeutic work at a young age because of incredible people who supported me when I was going through challenges in my own life. The therapeutic tools I teach are not just for my clients; I use them in my own life too and would not be where I am without these supports. As a mother, I have deep compassion and respect for parents and caregivers at all points in their parenting journey. Parent support and family work are integral parts of my practice.
My therapeutic approach is rooted in the tenets of Person-Centered Therapy, and is guided by the principles of CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). Through this lens, we will look closely at the interplay of thoughts, feelings and actions. A large sector of my practice is devoted to Exposure Therapy (for anxiety, panic and phobias) and specifically ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), for which I received extensive training and experience while working for Rogers Behavioral Health. I also have training in and incorporate the following: ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) and SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions).
I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Development and Studio Arts from Prescott College (Prescott, AZ) in 2004 and a Master of Arts Degree in Counseling Psychology with emphasis in Expressive Arts Therapy from California Institute of Integral Studies in 2013. While holding on to the best parts of this foundation, I have since completed additional training and supervised experience in the evidence-based models that are now at the forefront of my practice. My professional experience includes serving families affected by homelessness, youth in the foster care system, and young adults with severe and persistent mental illness, as well as individuals living with obsessive-compulsive disorder and other OC spectrum disorders, mood disorders and anxiety disorders. I have provided services in a variety of settings and levels of care; including outpatient care in schools and community settings, residential, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs.
I embrace diversity in my practice and work to continually examine and acknowledge issues of power, privilege and systemic oppression. During my years of therapeutic work, I have worked extensively with people in the Black, Latin(x), API and LGBTQ+ communities, including transgender and gender-variant individuals.
